Key ignition switch to Toggle switch - Anyone do this?

The project bike that seems to be going on forever, the previous owner obviously lost his key and rammed a screw driver in the key-hole torquing it to the "on" position.

The bike seemed to be in the always On position and would thus, never keep a charged battery.

The dude I bought the bike from filled the broke keyhole with some kind of black hard rubber sealant.

Since the bike I am reworking is strictly intended to be off road in the bush riding, I prefer to just have an ON / OFF toggle switch. Anyone ever do this?

There is no need for this bike to have keyed protection and I am not inclined to pay for that expensive keyed ignition switch - unless there is an el' cheapo alternative.

I have one bike which self hotwired itself so I put a battery disconnect on it. My problem is that you can disconnect the whole switch and it will still start. You can get cheap ebay key switches for as low as $3.00. I just looked. You could frame mount etc if it doesn't fit perfectly. That is cheaper than a toggle I believe.

Yeah, I'm thinking of just an On/Off switch.. I don't mind spending some money, just not $130 bucks.

It's a 1993. The ones for 40-50 bucks are for the later models on ebay.

The wiring plug is red rectangular with 3 pins.

Mine is via a toggle switch. All it does is activate the head light and tail light on mine (Or all the other electronics besides the ignition if you have horn, turn signals, starter relay circuit, etc)...The bar mounted kill switch allows the engine to run or stop. I am kick start only.

on a drum brake model i fitted a switch on the underneath of the right side of the air box where the CDI is, i did it as a security kill switch because the bike would start with any key,

i found these on ebay, fitted quite a few so far, the seem ok, only 1 persons broke, but i think that ewas more him than the lock, well worth the money. the plug is the same for early models, but needs cutting for disc TW.

Just get a DPDT switch and wire it like below. Then it will work just like a stock switch.... and if you want to get really fancy (and make your life a million times easier) make sure you cut the plug and wires off of your FUBAR'd switch and solder/heat shrink them onto the DPDT switch so that you can just plug it into your harness.
    Hope this helps

I like the idea of the TW w/o a key - just a toggle switch. Should be an easy wire up looking at the schematic.

I'm planning on deleting the key switch and replacing it with a switch from a WR450
Also I'm going to use a WR type start switch

I trying to make the front as clean and open as possible

Wow. Wish I lived in an area where I could trust my bikes to not "walk away".

I drove all day to Tennessee to ride with some forum folks a couple of years ago. Got there and realized I'd left the key at home. After some frantic calls and internet searches, we were able to hot wire a toggle switch into place that worked perfectly. I still carry it on the bike just in case I lose a key.
