    Breaking open a 1987 CDI

Well since mine is toast, I figured I'd break open the old one. These are the pictures from just removing the casing, I can see how moisture could of gotten in. This thing sat in a barn from 1990 to 2013. If anyone wants to tinker with the circuits let me know. We could use a 87 hero!

Acetone is supposed to dissolve the rubbery potting, give it a try if you have access to some.

I have a bad '87 CDI sitting on my workbench for the same reason- to break apart and look for the problem. The nice part of tinkering with broken stuff is you don't need to worry about breaking it!

I saw a build it yourself thread for a cdi. A simple circuit for a 1 cylinder engine. I converted a boat from a CDI back to a standard coil and it ran better, that was a matter of boat CDI $800.00 or rigged and running for $100.00

Do you happen to have a link to that thread? I have a lot of Jetski CDI's hat are two cylinder, I would think it could be converted to run as a single cylinder.

I'm not real knowledgeable on the CDI's but here is a thread which may also help from a fellow forum member on an 87.
