There have been a few on the forum who've expressed interest in visiting and riding in southern Utah. I guess I'm a little biased, but I think it's some great country, with quite a variety of terrain to enjoy. Most of my experience however, is in the southwest part of the state. I hope to spend more time in the southeastern part of the state, and will share my experiences when I do so.

I wish I was retired so I could show my forum buddies around. Unfortunately, I'm pretty busy in the fall, winter, and spring months when it is the best time to ride this area. It's not easy for me to take time off from work, so that pretty much leaves some Saturdays. During the summer months when it gets pretty warm my schedule is a little more flexible. Anyway, since I'm not often available to act as tour guide I decided to put this thread together as a resource to those who want to visit. It will be a work in progress. I would like to include a reference to the ride reports I've posted, since I can recommend each of the rides I've made around the area. I would like to include GPS tracks, and some information about places you can stay while in the area.

The two major cities in this area are Cedar City and St. George. I live 45 miles south of Cedar, and about 18 miles east of St. George at the "gateway" to Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon.

There are places to stay in St. George of course, and a lot in the way of places to eat, etc. But there is also the city traffic and atmosphere. For many of you that's not a problem, but I prefer the small town atmosphere so will recommend staying on the east side of the county.

There are 3 state park campgrounds east of St. George. Red Cliffs campground is just 16 miles up I-15 to the northeast. It is accessed via the frontage road south of Leeds. Quail Creek Reservoir and campground can also be accessed from the same frontage road, or from SR9 on the way to Hurricane. Sand Hollow Reservoir and campground is just a few miles south of SR9 on the west end of Hurricane. If you are self contained, there are a lot of places on BLM land where you can camp up to 14 days without paying a fee.

I'll try to post up a map later on with camping places detailed.

Since I can't very well recommend places I haven't been, I'll post links to rides that I've done in this area over the last year or so. There are a lot of places I still look forward to riding, and I'll post those up as I complete them.

The navigation information included on this web page is intended as a resource for my buds on the forum, but since anyone in the world with an internet connection can access this stuff I suppose there is a need for a disclaimer, as follows:

Many of these tracks weren't recorded on the ride. I retraced my route using Google Earth and created the tracks. I believe them to be accurate, or I wouldn't post them here. But, as always it is your responsibility to review the information and determine if it is suitable and safe for your use. I would encourage you to load the kml file in Google Earth and review it before using the gps files. Files with an f, or filt at the end of the name indicate the file has been filtered to less than 500 waypoints.

I might add, any time you are totally dependent on a gps receiver you are asking for trouble. Maps and a compass should be carried and consulted as well. Some of the rides, such as the Trumbull/Toroweap ride take you miles from civilization and help. You should always go well prepared with extra water & gas, parts, tools, first aid, etc. Whatever you need to be self supporting.
