I like the XCountry 650 and the G450X model looked cool to me -- I almost bought one -- but I like air cooled engines, DIY maintenance, being able to easily pick up the motorcycle, and a minimal entry fee.
Long live the internal combustion engine!

I know the 850 had some surge problems when it first came out, some friends owned them and had difficulty. I rode airheads all the time I owned bmw /6 and /7

Always liked those 850's. Not popular with the Beemer crowd. Designed to be a right in the middle model of the power-curve available. Buying public didn't buy.
Their production was very short. Nice bikes if you can find one not abused.

Kind of late reply here...to the OP:

Why not merge past 2001? Are you avoiding the 2002-up servo ABS? I ask because my 2002 GS is NO servo and there are many others without. This is my 3rd GS (50,000 miles and climbing) and I sold my second, a 2007 1200GS, because it was a PITA. Good on you for shopping 1100/1150. I would be happy to own either.

    May I ask why just 1995 - 2001?

I saw this the other day and even though I'm not in the market it caught my eye because, I love yellow bikes and I love the tank detail on this one.... it's a 2002 BMW R1150R .... not sure why it appeals to me so much but I really like the look of it.

So... I ended up buying a 2001 1150GS with 20k miles on it. "Like new". I had purchased the 2nd one delivered new 2000' GS at Ridewest, back in 2000 when they were still up from Green Lake. I had put over 90-k on that bike before selling it. I was able to ride an RS last week and decided to go back to a GS. Let's see how my neck holds up riding day long trips again

I was/am avoiding the high price tags on newer bikes.
