We Can Get Engine Guards!
|
|
|
|
|
I was talking with Tom from Turbocity.com and asked him about the possibility of an engine guard and he said he was very interested in fabricating a prototype. Here's what it reads:
"Hi Bryan, We have never made the skid plate/ engine guards for the TW200. I would like to, I need a bike here to proto type. Are you located in So Cal? Thanks Tom"
Unfortunately I'm not in the Terminator's land, but if anybody is, I think we could definitely benefit from this. I went on to state that I would try to find some people in his area to which I got:
"Let me know if you can find someone locally.
You can have them contact me directly.
I do go to the TW200 forum on occasion.
Thanks Tom"
You can contact Tom (turbo@turbocity.com) and request him to come up with one, or if you're in the area, you can work with him to get one designed.

Nobody? It ain't just the skidplate, ya know, but I'm sure he might come up with one of those too. Maybe better than the ones we've got available.

I emailed them last night, offering a bike.
Haven't heard back as yet, but will post their response when/ if I receive one.
I'd like to see a tubular one, similar to those on the Aussie AG200. But another source for an aluminum one is always a good thing.
Powdercoated '87 frame, disc front, XT350 tank, tall bars, risers, '03 motor and electrical, kickstarter, cut ATV rear rack, TCI front rack, upgraded wiring, kickstart, no safety switches, D2moto pegs, 8" headlight, Bighorn2, 55t, etc. Constantly in flux.

You know I've been really interested in having a TW125 and last night I ended up not finding them in any country on yamaha's site. But I did end up looking at the AG series they got down under. Those were some fine lookin bikes, but for the life of me I couldn't find a price to convert to USD.
Personally I like the tubular ones and the simple cage ones. Maybe he'll get into both.
And if anybody does manage to meet up with Tom, talk him into making a headlight guard. He's got them for a lot of his other models.

I'm talking about the side guards, Wes. Here's a pic of them on the XT225. Unfortunately the way Tom makes them, you have to have his type of skidplate on to get the guards on. However his plates on the others looks pretty sturdy. I think it might be a decent deal.

If you or anybody else, for that matter, would fabricate some and start selling, I'd say I'll purchase a set.

No reply from Turbo City re: the use of my bikes.
Think I'll look into making my own, or import an AG200 item.

Hi Russ,
I did respond to your e-mail, but never heard anything back-- sounds like a communications breakdown...LOL
Hi Russ,
I would like to use you TW200 to do some more proto type work on. Is the bike stock/ unmodified?
I would need the bike for about 2 weeks.
I will give you what ever product is designed on your bike, for the use of it.
I would be ready for the bike the first or second week of Jan.
Let me know if you are interested and this will work for you.
Thanks Tom

Tom,
Not sure how I might have missed your email, but thanks for responding on the site.
I will have a bike available anytime after this weekend, and would be more than happy to deliver it to you.
There are no mods to this particular bike other than handguards. I also have several bare frames and motors I could bring you if this would make life easier.
I will contact you by phone this afternoon.
Thanks.

Hi Aussie Wes here! I have both TOM'S skid plate & side bar set on my Kawasaki Super Sherpa, bloody good quality materials & workmanship. He especially designed them to give totall protection to the ignition wiring harness that comes out of the front of the Sherpa's crankcase. I have spoken to him on a few accasions by phone & he is a most obliging bloke! Sadly I hae already got the Ricochet skid plate on my TW200. I'm tempted to buy Tom's new TW200 engine bars & try to fabricate some brackets so as I can try to install them onto my Ricochet bash plate. sEEYA!wES!
A good bike in the wilderness is a great companion!

We dropped the bike off at Turbo City this morning.
We found Tom and his wife to be great folks, and I had my first opportunity to view their products firsthand.
This stuff is first rate. Far lighter, stronger, and more attractive than most.
I was particularly impressed with their rear luggage/ pannier racks. Being a weight freak, I hefted one that was designated for a DL1000, and was immmediately impressed buy both it's light weight, and overall rigidity. The "smaller tubes, but more of them" design appears to be pretty efficient.
I had no familararity with the Turbo City products prior to Tom's offer. Frankly, when I looked at this stuff online it looked pretty flimsy. Not so.
Anyway, they'll have the bike for awhile, and I'm confident that you'll be impressed with the products that result.

Tom says it's all done.
Southern Cal was basically under water last week and they were unable to complete the photo shoot of the bike for their catalog, so they've kept the bike for a bit longer.
Hope to have some pics by the weekend.

The main problem with this design is access to the oil filter cover...I'm always taking mine off and flushing, I find this to be key to longevity in these yammie singles...If it's just three bolts then I don't suppose it wouldn't cause much problem, but it is extra hassle that may deter some and cause neglect in this vital maintenance area.

TWrider,
Ha! I was just going to post this concern of mine. I believe this design to be lacking this necessary access to the oil filter cover.
It'd be a bit of a hassel to have to remove this everytime an oil change occured.
