Bike cuts out at ANY stop. help!!!
Reply Quote
Hey guys, i know you mostly talk about 200cc bikes here but ive got a 125cc tw 2004 model. Here is my problem:

Ive just recently passed my CBT (here in the uk we have to do a compulsary basic test to ride a 125 on L plates) and ive recently bought a tw 125. Every time i ride the bike and then come to a stop, it cuts out on me. This occurs at practically EVERY stop i come to and is incredibly annoying as i have to (attempt to) start the bike in built up traffic. The bike rides perfectly otherwise and is causing me much stress. I have checked everything i can think of and im having to buy a new carb for it to try and remedy the problem. can anyone help me? i LOVE the bike and dont want to get rid of it :(

sorry for being such a beginner at all this guys, i do hope you can help me.

thank you.

What exactly does it do?  Does it kind of sputter and die, or is it a quick cut-off like when you hit the kill switch?

When you restart it, does it idle fine?  Will it idle for a full minute without choke once it's warm (without giving it gas, of course)?

Need a bit more info to really figure out what's up. :S

i forgot to mention... when the bike cuts out it makes a simple 'click' sound. i havent a clue if this has any implication other than its just cutting out.

if anyone can give ANY help on this issue it would mean alot, as im shitting my pants that im gonna have to try and get my money back, let alone end up getting my backend smashed into.

first thing I'd check is the battery connections.  The "click" sound you mentioned, may be the battery loosing ground?

what do you do at every stop when it cutts out and dies? When it is running  at stand still try those things and see if you can make it do it.

i come up to the stop, pull my brakes, then pull my clutch in. as soon as it comes to a stop it cuts out as if ive pressed the killswitch. if i rev the bike slightly while im coming or at a stop it is ok. is it normal for you to rev the bike at every stop? ive checked the idle speed and everything seems ok. if i put the idle of the bike higher than normal will any damage or unpredictable behaviour occur? thanks guys.

Try putting it in neutral when coming to a stop. When you pull the clutch in, there is still some drag on the engine, making the idle lower. Or just keep on the throttle a bit. Not unusual.

I am in no way trying to offend you, but only attempting to solve your problem for you.
You say you apply the brakes first, then apply the clutch....
You may want to try braking earlier, then pull in the clutch first, then the brakes.
Sounds like you are slowing down with the brake and stalling the bike before you pull the clutch
lever in...
Again, not trying to offend you, just offering a different method that may work for you.

haha, dont worry about offending me im a complete retard in the sense that i have no idea about bikes.

so i should brake earlier, then when i stop pull the clutch in? i thought i had been doing that properly but i will make sure i follow what your saying as it very well could be my riding!

sorry guys for being such a newbie, but we all have to start somewhere i guess :)

thank you for the help!

Have you tried letting someone else ride the bike, maybe someone more experienced riding a bike, to see if they have the same problem.

I'd definately give that a shot before I ponied up for a new carb! ;)

Just turn the idle speed up a bit and ride on. Might want to try adjusting the pilot screw a bit richer, too. North american TWs as adjusted very lean and some have a similar problem when the idle speed is too low.

QWERTY said what I was thinking. Have you tried adjusting the idle up a little? If you have the idle set too low, while it'll sound cool, it'll probably die when you just cut the throttle.

If you're cruising at 50mph, and pull the clutch in and cut the throttle, does it die? I'm assuming when you say 'come to a stop', you just mean the RPMs bottom.

If other people don't have the same problem, it sounds like you're getting something out of whack with the clutching and braking when you stop. I gotta say, that's pretty odd. It's normally when people are trying to go that they'll stall it.

Clutch technique is something that's nearly impossible to describe. Your best bet is to find someone who can ride your bike and show you how to do it. First, very slowly in a parking lot. Then, with you as a passenger/pillion on the bike in a parking lot. Then switch and see if he/she can see what you're doing when you stop or if it's "cured".

This is the correct braking method....
Just remember to pull the clutch before the bike stalls.

Another braking fact is that you will mostly use the front brake and not the back one......

Do you have an experienced friend you can ride with?
Trade bikes, and observe his technique on your bike. If it's ok when someone else rides it, you just need to work on your style a bit.
