2 Up Peavine Mountain.

With the weather unseasonably warm around here this weekend proved to have some great riding opportunities.

I did not pass them up. Smile [:)]

Reno, NV, Peavine Mountain. 11/29/2008

Made a run from my house in Lemmon Valley about 14 miles out to the top of Peavine Mountain. About half of the trip is on the local roads from my house.
The dirt road up to the top is about 7-7.5 miles total, and climbs about 3200 feet to a peak of 8200 feet in elevation. Total about a 2 hour ride out and back. Back to my house for lunch then a run out to Moonrocks as seen in a previous post. Total miles ridden is approx 58, all with pillion.

General dirt road conditions were pretty good. There is a lot of communication and radio/TV equipment on the top of Peavine so the road is generally well maintained and on this trip was passable by a compact car full of passengers. Not a lot of large rocks in the road and those have plenty of room to drive around them with everything but a large truck. Biggest challenge is that the road is mainly hard packed dirt with areas of loose sand and a lot of areas of large gravel and broken rocks that can cause traction problems as they roll under the tires. Usually by this time of year the top 500-1000 feet of the mountain is snowed in, but this year only the slightest dusting of snow was seen and for all practical purposes the road was dry and dusty.

Faithful little TW held up without a single hiccup. Had a couple of minor slips of traction on the loose rocks of the dirt portion, but considering the road conditions I have no complaints at all. With passenger the total load on the bike was just  less than 250 lbs, it had no trouble maintaining good speed up the hill even in its steeper sections. Held an easy going 20-30 mph up the majority of the hill with the limitation being firmly above the seat.

Forgot to take a picture of Peavine Mountain as seen from my neighborhood before writing this ride report. But will try and snap a shot of it and add a post later.

Here we are at the top. Kind of looking North above Lemmon Valley. This was a fun picture to take as we did it with the timer on the camera. Took a couple of quick runs to get it right.
You can also see the general type of rock that was the road. The more traveled areas were a little more pulverized, but most of it was hard pack with gravel on it.

This is the only picture of the road I took. Looking down from the top. Because of the nice weather the road was a little busy to be comfortable stopping long enough for more pictures.

Looking out toward my neighborhood.

Looking SE toward Downtown Reno and Sparks, NV. Can see some small pieces of the road as well toward the bottom of the picture.

Hope you all are having as good a time blasting around on the TWs as I am. Enjoy the ride.

I was going to say... 2 up a mountain? You both must be lightweights. I've had a passenger on the back for about 20 minutes and couldn't imagine climbing any kind of hill!

Very nice picture of the landscape though. A+!

Alain, very nice post!! I was actually there on Sunday and Monday; beautiful views and an easy ride up the road. There are numerous single-tracks throughout the mountains, we'll have to tear them up sometime - you might have to leave your woman at home for those though :) Not sure what time of the day you were up there but, I made it up there around 9am and the fog, settling on the city was gorgeous. thanks, Adam

Here is a picture of Peavine Mountain from my neighborhood. Virtually the same view I have from my backyard, but without the obstructed view.

Yeah, isn't that the truth. I am born and raised here. So have seen a huge amount of the growth. Seen most of the big buildings go up, and the town in general expand beyond my imagination.

I was only a few years old in 1978 so cannot refer back to much that you probably remember. But it is safe to say that the town pretty much fills the whole basin now and is busy working its way up the hills just as far as possible. Reno/Sparks pretty much extends West to Verdi and East to Lockwood, North to Stead and South to Pleasant Valley. Sparks also now goes more than halfway to Pyramid Lake out the Pyramid Highway. Massively larger than what you remember. General metropolitan area is now est population around 350,000.

If you want a real mind blowing view, take a look on Google Earth and take a virtual tour of The Biggest Little City in the World.
