Curious about gas cap vent hole
Reply Quote
I've read a few times about a tiny vent hole in the gas cap and I'm not seeing it on my bike. I'm not having any problems with the bike but when I was filling up for fuel I didn't notice a tiny vent hole in the cap. If somebody has the time, please post a photo of this vent hole. Thanks in advance.

You raise an interesting question. Does the TW have a vented gas cap? I suspect it does because I never hear the woosh suction sound when the cap is removed to refuel. I ask because I bought an unkeyed Yamaha fuel cap from my local shop to cover an unused tank, but am tempted to use it on the tw because I don't really need a locked gas tank and it works much more smoothly than the oem locking version. It was a few bucks instead of the $50-75 for a replacement keyed version. I realize I should just put it on and run it to see if it causes problems but your question prompted my considering that option. The local shop had a whole box of them and likely other shops do also. tom

Usually the keyhole is used as the exterior vent. As I recall the cap is vented down through the locking mechanism, the cap is hardly air tight. Oh. And it leaks when the bike is on its side... ;)

On my 08's, if you turn the cap upside down, and look at the black plastic along the edge of the cap, you'll see a little square area with a very tiny pin hole in it.  I suspect this is the vent.  A couple guys I rode with had the vents plug up and create a vacume causing the bike to appear to run out of gas.  This is the area I cleaned and blew out with air that corrected the problem.
Hope this helps.

Would be great if one of the folks here that know where this vent hole is would post up a picture. Curiousity is killing me.

You want to see the vent holes?

rub some 2 stroke oil on the gas cap and wait a day or two while you ride, i did it because i wanted to get the color back on mine (is lost some of the color from being left outside).
