Better Oil ?
Reply Quote
Howdy Folks ! Just wanted to share a recent oil experience. My son and I loaded up the Tdub for a three day campout.
We found ourselves deep in the Oregon mountains in 100 degree F weather. Tdub was fully loaded and pulling for all she was worth (without complaint). Checking the oil at a fuel stop I noticed the Mobil 1 racing  4T was sloshing around in there like water ! Then and there I decided to try 20w-50 next oil change. Up to this time I've been using 10w-40 with no problems.
The local Napa store had Amsoil synthetic motorbike 20w-50, so we gave it a try. Obviously the oil works OK, but actually the transmission shifts noticably better. This is a big plus in my book as I have tried several of the motorbike specific oils. So is it better oil ? LOL !

I have the Mobil 1 4T in my TW and think it shifts a little rough. It has been 102-107 here in Texas for far too long. (It makes you miss the relative cool of 96 degrees.) I will give the Amsoil 20/50 a try since it is available at a local independant parts house. I will follow up to this post with my impressions after the change.

You are a brave member Turtle Chaser. Mentioning oil on this forum really wakes everyone up. So many here are VERY passionate about their oil yet I doubt anyone has had an oil related failure, other than having the wrong filter installed.

Lets hear it: Has anyone had an oil related failure due to the brand/viscosity of oil they used?

I switched from Amsoil 10w-40 synth to Schaeffers 5w-50 syth, I like their moly additives. The weather doesn't get to hot here but my riding is very slow, 1st and 2nd gears only for over an hour, so the oil gets really hot. The 50 seems to run a little cooler, only going on engine sounds. I also wanted something for year round use here so the 5w is great for me in the winter as well. It's hard to find but I have to buy eveything on-line anyway.

[Jarrod Weaver]  I've never heard of Schaeffers, who carries it?

I get mine here: http://www.shop.schaefferoilnw.com/product.sc?categoryId=2&productId=19

Schaeffer's home page: http://www.schaefferoil.com/

Check out this test on a racing small block!!!  http://www.kijinc.com/

PS: I've owned 31 bikes and 26 cars so far and have never had an oil related failure. I had a BMW HP2 "air cooled" and tried all brands. On the temp gauge the Shaeffer's did run the coolest for me.

You can send some of that heat to us in MN as the new record low-high for today is 62 degrees. Summer has not really made it here yet (except for a week in the 80-90 range) and it seems weird to fire up the gas logs in the middle of July!

Will gladly send you a spare 20 degrees. Maybe Bill Gates can waste some of the money he plans to spend on cooling the ocean to build a big fan to even out the temperatures.
