04 Bogs and sputters at 1/4 to half throttle
Reply Quote
I have a 2004 TW that has become increasingly hesitant in the middle of throttle---- at about 1/4 until just over half. At these throttle positions, the bike sputters and chokes and can barely continue running. I don't really notice it while driving, but just revving it at a stoplight and it is very obvious....

The problem is worse when the bike is cold, and this bike takes FOREVER to get up to a temperature where it's happy.

From what I've read on this forum, it is probably the needle. Not the pilot because it starts and idles fine (except for the cold start thing), not the main because at full throttle it is fine. But the needle?????

Now the question is, what is going on with the needle? And what can I do about it? This problem seems to be getting worse (although it has also been cold recently).....

I bought this bike with 300 miles on it about 4 months ago. I had to change out some gaskets in the carb because they were rotten from sitting so long, but overall, the carb looked pretty clean.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hole in the carb diaphragm?
It might not be pulling the needle up enough.

I took everything apart today. The diaphragm looked fine, as did everything else. No clogs in the jets, the needle had nice spring action, no parts missing etc. I can't figure it out!

The bike really runs ok, it's just one small section of the throttle the rpms actually go DOWN as you increase the throttle. Once you get past that zone of the throttle, everything is fine....

Although, I would say that my throttle response is pretty lousy at all throttle ranges.

I think it must be the needle, I just hope I'm not mistaken and barking up the wrong tree.

check the diaphram for very small holes by holding it right up to a bright flashlight. My CL350 gave me trouble with it's old diaphrams

it sounds like an air jet or the emulsion tube or the transfer jets.
you need to spray air through all the holes in the carb, assuming that your
needle isn't raised too far witch would cause the problem too.
it definately sounds like a "too rich" problem. if it was too lean
it would pop and ping and misfire, not so much a bogging down sound.
