Interchangeable Parts for Different Years?
|
|
|
|
|
Hi... Been running into a lot of probs finding parts for my '87 Honda. Talked to a guy that owns a shop and he said most manufacturers of bikes are ceasing production of parts for bikes as early as 10 years old. They said this has come about more recently because of the sluggish bike sales and they want to deter folks from buying used and want them to buy new. My question is, since the TW seems to have stayed the same over many years, are most of the engine and electrical parts interchangeable between newer and older models? I have a '99 and am wondering if something goes wrong if I will be in a position of not being able to find some of the parts because it's getting older. Thanks!

Half the mods on this forum are sticking parts from other bikes on the TW.
What's the worry? ![Wink [;)]](http://tw200forum.com/emoticons/emotion-5.gif)

not worry, but possible preparation? also, don't like to modify, but keep stock. just wondering if newer model's parts generally work on older models or if i'm looking at hard to find parts as my bike gets older. it's a 99. like i said, the manufacturers are d/cing most parts on bikes 10 years old and more to promote new bike sales.

Minor changes from year to year for the most part. You can mix & match pretty freely. Nothing to worry about.

The bulk of the major hard parts have been the same since '87.
"87 plastics will fit a 2010, for example, as will most of the major hard parts. Main differences are the later disc brake front end and changes in the charging and electrical systems over the years. In fact for the most part the only parts that absolutely won't interchange betwen years are electrical, and most of those have workarounds.
My own bike s registered as an '87, has an '01 front end, '03 engine and charging system, 91 swingarm, early kickstart...yada yada ad nauseum. For the most part they were all bolt-ons.
You're good to go for the forseeable future.
And as long as this board exists you're only a click away from help.
Powdercoated '87 frame, disc front, XT350 tank, tall bars, risers, '03 motor and electrical, kickstarter, cut ATV rear rack, TCI front rack, upgraded wiring, kickstart, no safety switches, D2moto pegs, 8" headlight, Bighorn2, 55t, etc. Constantly in flux.
