Can anyone tell me if it would effect performance to remove the evap cannister? Any down side? This is on a 1990 TW with 1300 miles. Thanks in advance! Tim

Everyone is afraid the "Gubenator of Kahleefonyah".....will come down like the opening scene of "The Terminator", and get you for messing with the evaporation canister..... I remember reading the rerouting of the hose in the forums..... just can't remember when. It was a simple deal. I don't believe it'll do anything positive or negative... it'll just eliminate the unsightly can.

My searches didn't find anything either. One of my static projects has the can too. If I ever get around to rebuilding this one I'll add the can to things I'll see if I can hit at 300-600 yards. I'll fill it with stale gas first. My memory isn't what it used to be....but I think removing the can envolved routing the hose back to the overflow vent tube or just plugging the additional outlet. If you get to it before I do....let me know. I think they were worried about a few drops of gasoline from the float bowl over flow reaching the ground ..."GOD FORBID". "What were we talking about....???"

I doubt it will make any difference in performance. However, if you remove it save it.
Calif will start doing semi yearly (every other year) smog checks on motorcycles in the near future, like they do on cars now. There will be a cut off year which if your motorcycle is older than that year it will be exempt. My guess is you will be safe with a 1990 but you never know. Missing components means automatic failure. Good luck.
Long live the internal combustion engine!

I also remember they actually had a check valve (they called it "Roll-Over Valve") installed in the tank somewhere that I think shut the gas off if you layed the bike over or dropped it. So I think there is something screwed in the tank somewhere....maybe one of the "Left Coasters" will chime in with the answer.

I'm in the same boat, but decided to leave it for simplicities sake. The canister acts as the vent on the cali model instead of the gas cap. if you plug the outlet on the tank for the canister and dont get a vented cap you may end up with some vapor lock. also not sure what capping the port on the carb would do? so like i said i left mine for simplicities sake!

Oh Cototaxi, the idea of the canister isn't to keep gas from leaking from the float bowl... its designed to take the gas vapors from the tank and put them into the carb instead of letting them go into the atmosphere. You know all that global warming garbage. not sure if it really works well or does anything but it makes california feel better about itself... i guess.

The canister weighs less than a pound, has zero affect on performance and (arguably) causes zero service problems.
Ditto for removing it.
I leave mine intact as it cuts down on the gas fumes in my garage and costs fewer of my limited supply of brain cells when I need to drag the bike into a Mexican hotel room overnight.
Powdercoated '87 frame, disc front, XT350 tank, tall bars, risers, '03 motor and electrical, kickstarter, cut ATV rear rack, TCI front rack, upgraded wiring, kickstart, no safety switches, D2moto pegs, 8" headlight, Bighorn2, 55t, etc. Constantly in flux.

I took mine off just to do it. Cap the port on the carb, and run a line from the port on the tank down where the other vent hoses are, otherwise it'll vapor lock on you (DAMHIK).
Is it worth spending much time fiddling with it? Probably not...

Oh great. If/when they do that I'm selling the TW. It already costs a fortune to register, and smog it on top of that? Forget it. Plus we'll all have to put the stock cans back on, and put the carb back to stock as well, or it'll never pass. Damn, I want out of this state so bad!
Back on-topic : Like others have said, you can remove the canister without harm. It won't affect performance one way or the other. It will, IMO, look better without the thing pointlessly hanging off the bike though. lol

TuRnEnEm,
Now that's what I'm thinking about!! Wish I had that little bracket to mount something onto. What better than a cup holder, eh??
