I am getting ready to pick up a 2009 TW200 and was curious what the top speed would be with factory sprockets. I am not concerned with the throttle completely wound out, just an average cruising speed. I am buying the bike to ride forest service roads here in Washington and to use for scouting/hunting on some of the trails available. Thanks.

14x50 gears topspeed around 75 mph., cruisingspeed 60/65 mph.
The engine turns very high rpm, redline I think is 9300 rpm.
Personally I think 50/55 is top cruising speed.
i have a 55 rear sprocket and will not go much faster then 50 mph, but that is me.
Follow the break in procedure and go from there.
Good luck.

I have the 15x50 and with a stock TW rear topspeed was 70mph with my new Maxxis Ceros rear tire I only get 60 or so but no regrets as I usually cruise trails at 15mph on a 45* climb!!! Comfortably

Standard engine/carb with performance exhaust pipe 14/50 gears
125 km/h - but I wont go at that speed for more than a few seconds. The bike vibrates to much.
As far as I know you cannot over rev the engine under load - once again - as I understand it the valve design/layout prevent the engine from revving to high. They start to "float" ??? I might be incorrect.
My cruising speed is 95 to 110 km/h Fuel consumption at that speed is 28-32km per liter Driver weight - 91kg (200 lbs)

Another guy with Ceros, concrats! I have driven 100 km/h (60 mph) and it felt enough for me (at winter). I consider 47 sprocket, cause my usage is mainly on the road.

The TW engine is one tough little kid and will happly cruse all day at 55 to 60 mph, I have a totally stock 2005 TW approaching 10,000 miles and rode the freeway (I-94) and keep up with most semi's going 65mph (indicated)(freeway has a posted 70 mph limit), I took it up to 70mph but the engine vierations are annoying. I understand that the engine has a rev limiter so you can't over rev it. the speedometer has a 55 mph redline because it is a carryover from the national 55 mph limit days.

"Robert B. LamarFor me the top "Crusing speed" is 55 mph with stock tires and sprockets. The vibration really picks up above 55. The speedo is red above 55 mph and while they don't say why in the manual there must be a reason. It's probably engine cooling, brakes, suspension or tires. I have not heard any stories of fading brakes, wrecks or mechanical failures attributed to high crusing speeds. Mabye the red on the speedo is just Yamaha being chicken or not testing the bike above 55??????"
I thought the reason the speedo is red at 55MPH is because that was the max speed limit when this bike was first built.

yea, I have an '09, and it has the red ALL the way after 55. I'm fine from 55-60, but I've hit 75 when it was all the way opened, only for a few seconds tho.

It has to do with the speed limit here in America many many years ago. I'm fairly certain the "red line" was basically a government imposed thing.

Don't you guys read the owners manual? Mine clearly states that extended operation over 55mph is not recommended.

My Speedo goes to 140 km without any red-lines. I rarely exceeds 120 (75mph), My cruising speed is between 95 and 110 (that`s 60 to 68 mph)
I would like to know which engine would last longer.................. Does it really matter if the engine lasts for 20 000 or 25 000 km`s?
These small bore engines need new hardware (Rings/bearings/piston) at around 30 000km. Not always nececary but always a good practice to keep your bike in a good hassle free condition. Parts are cheap and for a few $ the engine would be like new again.
If you want to swop the old tired engine out with a new complete motor, including gearbox, it would set you back with about $1500 US (ZA R 12000)
What I really wanted to say is this:
Ride the bike like you want to, if it breaks - fix it. Chances are better that the rider would break before the bike does.

I've seen other bikes with the same thing, and also my old Jeep had the 55 red-line, and obviously it had no problem cruising at 80 all day...
I haven't done any real research on the matter. However, from bits and pieces that I have heard and read over time, I have surmised that it was government-imposed.
Edit: I just read this bit (below) from Wikipedia.
"On September 1, 1979, in a rulemaking that also regulated speedometer and odometer accuracy, the NHTSA required speedometers to have special emphasis on the number 55 and a maximum speed of 85 mph [note that the TW 200 speedometer also happens to max at 85, as did the speedometer on my 1984 Jeep Cherokee]. However, on October 22, 1981,
the NHTSA proposed eliminating speedometer and odometer rules because
they were "unlikely to yield significant safety benefits" and "
highlighted '55' on a speedometer scale adds little to the information
provided to the driver by a roadside speed limit sign." (While odometer
accuracy also has an economic benefit—more accurate sales of cars—the
NHTSA's rules must have a clear safety benefit to be valid.)[27][28][29] " - taken from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Maximum_Speed_Law#1973_.E2.80.94_55.C2.A0mph_National_Speed_Limit
While this excerpt suggests that the requirement was dropped in 1981, it stands to reason that some manufacturers may have simply left the "55 emphasis" in the design.
This is of course all merely two minute speculation. Don't quote me on any of this...

my best top speed was 78 mph, downhill; rpms with stock 14/50 was 9,980. Redline on this bike is after 10,000 rpm; I believe it is 10,500rpm - which I've never come close to reaching. I can reach 73-75 on flat, although it's buzzin' pretty good.
TW likes 60-65 just fine, this puts the rpms around 8,400-8,800 (roughly). TW does employ a bulletproof engine! :)

I've been ringing my 2003 TWs neck for 12,000+miles, I try keep the oil changed @ 1000-1500mile intervals. I hit 75mph every day I ride it and run around San Diego several times a week on the freeway. Crazy but true. I like the steering stabilizer. at that speed it gets picky about where my weight is on the bike. I dont have a tach, and I'm running 14/45T sprokets.I think the tw engine is smooth at 60-70.(compaired to other bikes designs from the same era. ) it's just sings much louder.

Question about the speedometer:
Is it optomistic by 3-4 mph when it shows..say.. 60mph?
If i ever get caught speeding on a T-Dub I'm going to cry.

My GPS shows my bike doing around 60 when the speedo says 63~64.
If I get a freeway speeding ticket on my TW I'm going to scan, post, and brag about it.

I've been told by a few people that thr reason for the 55mph cutoff on the American versions was liabilty related, due to the speed rating of the tires.
I was under the impression that unrated tires were supposed to be good to 87 mph, so this may be bunk.

Mine is geared "14/45" and I can cruise at 60 MPH all day long with the bike loaded as seen in my "avatar". I have seen it reach 75 on level ground with no wind. I run Premium grade gas, and Mobil 1 V twin oil. Just an all around good bike.

The TW tires are speed rated "H" for sustained speeds up to 93mph.
The red on the American speedos is a holdover from the 55mph national speed limiot fiasco. It has nothing to do with the performance of which the bike is capable.
When I first bought Tdub shifting became very stiff after sustained highway runs at 60-65mph, faster when drafting cages. After a few thousand miles that hasn't been a problem. Maybe transmission glitches are the reason the manual says to avoid sustained operation over 55mph.

"So go on and write me up for one-twenty-five, post my face wanted dead or alive." "Take my license, all that jive!" "I... can't... drive... FIFTY-FIVE!"
What a cluster-**** that era was. And now the "climate-change" folks (previously global-warming) are trying to bring all that back.

Duh!!!!! The Owners Manual....some pull the "rulebook" out as they wish. With the proper oil and care no issues. Good judgement and the proper common sense are all that is needed. WE all read the manual ...........and also throw the directions away when putting things together....BOYS WILL BE BOYS.
