ideas on replacing seat bolts with a hand removable type

I seem to be removing my seat often. I been thinking of some wing type bolts that I can hand turn. Has anyone else done this or have a better idea?

i checked mine for this idea the other day, with some wingnuts that I had laying around.
There does not seem to be enough clearance to get the wings in between the bracket
not to mention, it is a Bolt, not a Nut.
Maybe you could weld something on the bolt head, or use a bolt with a screw driver head to make it easier.

I don't bother bolting my seat down. It has never been a problem and i find i take my seat off pretty regularly.

Doesn't it go flying off on bumpy ground though?
I had the same question a week or two ago over in the yahoo group. "Nick" suggested the following there:
--------------
Hi,
the bolt thread is 6mm by 1mm thread pitch. The bolt is indeed in a 'pocket' which will require a much longer bolt to be used with a tubular spacer to bring it low enough to rotate freely. I would be a bit concerned about it rubbing on the tyre at full compression. Be careful, nice idea though, it is a pain to remove the seat especially when covered in mud.
Another idea might be to loctite some threaded bar into the threads in the bottom of the seat, then cross drill it and use 'R' pins to secure the seat on, use a metal washer and small rubber washer (a tap washer) under the 'R' pins to stop the seat rattling about when stood up off road. That would be very quick to remove (still get muddy though).
Nick

My Ducati Monster had a removable rear seat cover, the bolts heads were about 1" diameter x 1/4" thick with a knurled edge, they also had a slot that you could put a quarter into to tighten or loosen them. A set of these would be easy to make or maybe find on e-bay.

I've been thinking about machining some "thumb nuts" for mine. They would be a smaller diameter where the threaded portion is and then widen to a larger diameter after they clear the brackets. The larger part would be knurled or otherwise designed to provide grip. However, as has been posted here before, clearance for the tire at full compression has to be looked into first.

Yup !! That is definitely the ticket !!! I will take a set !
And whoever was worried about "full shock compression" must just not have enough to worry about. Unless of course you plan on jumping triples on the TW.
My quick measurements told me that the 6mm thread needs to be 16mm long (like stock) and you need about 40mm on the shaft to clear the frame rail enough to turn the "T".

Mule: you are amazing! I am assuming you keep "accidentally" discovering the best possible solution to the most annoying little, seemingly inconsequential - but universal - problems with these scoots. I will take 4 of those as soon as you build them....
Dang! That is a truly elegant solution....

Brilliant. Simple, Elegant, and the solution. Remnds me of the days when I had to loosen T handles on my valve covers on my Chevelle to adjust the lash on the rockers. When can I get some?

Sniff, sniff, you guys didn't like my "thumb nuts" :-(
Actually I forgot that they are bolts, not studs in the seat requiring nuts. They could still be made in a similar manor with the knurled top and by bonding in a 6mm bolt (JB Weld).
The "T" handle would enable tightening them more than a knurl would. Also if they got stuck the "T" would be better.

Here is a shot of the other side, as you can see the handle can be "clocked" to run along the frame rail minimizing any chance of tire contact.
In order to "clock" the handle you just need to find the right thickness washer. On one side I used just a flat washer and on the other side I used a flat and a lock washer. Trying to determine how, if at all.....Yamaha put the nutplates in the seat would be a flippin pain in the ass so your on your own when it comes to instalation.
The main reason I made these is because it's so hot down here in Florida that the water in your battery goes away and I try to keep an eye on it so the battery lasts. I LIKE lead acid batterys, They seam to let you know when they're starting to go south unlike some of the "NEW" batteries that just drop off and quit when you need them most. (I don't have a kicker)
It looks like it's going to be a worthwhile addition. If your serious about these I'll look into making 50 sets or so. The metric set screws run about $28 for a box of 100. Stainless is high, I could make them out of aluminum and use a roll pin instead of a dowel, might be even less exspensive. It all depends on what you think you want to spend on a couple of seat screws.
It's up to you guys.....mine are done....Smiles
Post any ideas that you may have and I'll try and get something going here in the next week or so.

Mule:
I am certainly serious. Heck, I'll finance the entire materials outlay if you wish. I think they are a geat idea - and I like the stainless version What the heck, if you're gonna do it, do it up proper....
I need two sets; and what salt you get naturally we spread on our streets every winter - and spend the summers splashing it up on our vehicles every time it rains.

I ordered the set screws and dowel pins, I found some set screws that were cheaper.
I could have bought stainless set screws but they were stupid money and a little "Neverseize" will do the same thing, the threads are not exsposed so.....
I'll look into the material/cutting tool cost on Monday.
