Do I need to change oil filter evey oil change? Can I run sythetic in 07 tw200? thanks

at least clean it with WD-40, blow dry with compressed air, and make sure no tears / holes in the screen. should be set

Are the o-rings usually ok or should I go by new ones.

You should inspect the O-rings for damage.  If the O-rings are not allowing oil to escape, they are undoubtedly fine. Smile [:)]

Synthetic is fine, as long as it is JASO MA rated. Rotella T Syn, fine, Mobil 1, probably not. Its not the base oil chemistry, but the additive package that matters when it comes to wet clutches and transmission gears.

Yeah... strange, but with a wet clutch sharing oil with the engine, you actually DON'T want your oil TOO slippery. Wink [;)]

I use Shell, Rotella T, 5W/40 Synthetic motor oil in my motorcycle.  My clutch works great, and the transmission shifts very smoothly. Smile [:)]

I've been using Shell Rotella T SAE15W-40 for couple months and it really works good even in Florida winter time (40's-50's this year). It's absolutely a hardworking oil Big Smile [:D]

Spudrider. I once met a bearing scientist from a really big car manufacturers labs. They were selling my company some hi tech bearings. As a back-yard mechanic, I had to ask him "What is the best kind of engine oil to use?" He said single grade oil. Why ? Because the multi-grade oils all end up as single grade oils after about 1000 miles. So, he said, why pay more for multigrade, unless you're prepared to change your oil every 1000 miles.? He did explain how it all worked in very technical language. It made sense to me. A 5W/40 gradually becomes 5W oil. So the moral of the story is, if you use 5W/40 don't leave it in there too long. Otherwise use a heavier weight. Also, the lower number is the important one, not the higher number.

For what it's worth. I'm not lecturing here. I only know what I was told. If there are any lubrication engineers on this forum, perhaps they could expand on this. We won't turn you in to the "Big Oil Police":-))

Thank you for that information, TW-87; it is very interesting. Smile [:)]  I do change my oil every thousand miles.  I like the Rotella T, 5W/40 Synthetic oil, because it makes my gearbox shift so smoothly. Smile [:)]  I am definitely not a petroleum engineer. Wink [;)]  I decided to try the Rotella T, 5W/40 Synthetic oil after I read the essays in the following links.  I don't know if the information contained in these essays is correct, but I have had very good results with the Rotella T, 5W/40 Synthetic oil. Smile [:)]

Excellent links. The second article was fascinating and completely consistent with everything the bearing scientist from the "large lab" told me. Did you notice, in that article the following:
"Every time a VII molecule gets broken, the oil loses some of its high temperature viscosity." This is what the scientist told me many moons ago. Now that I think of it, there were not very many (if any) synthetic oils on the market ( at that time), so he was only addressing the refined oils available back then.

Thank you. Now I need to go shopping for some oil...

Smile [:)]  I had not read those essays for a while, so I had forgotten a lot of the information contained in them.  However, I remembered that everything in the essays made good sense to me, so I followed the author's recommendations! Wink [;)]  As the author suggested, I have had a very good experience using Shell, Rotella T, 5W/40 Synthetic motor oil in my motorcycle. Smile [:)]

How many years ago?

20 years ago, dino 10W-40 caused "black death" in some engines. 5W-30 wasnt much better. Ancient history, although there are reports that Royal Purple does shear down prematurely, maybe due to obsolete additive formulas?

Both base oil and additive chemistry has advanced drastically even in the last decade. Shell's XHVI Group III+ base oil used in 5W-40 Rotella is relatively new. Afton and Lubrizol have come up with shear-stable VII's that allow 75W-140 gear oils to go 100,000 miles. "Self healing" starfish-shaped VII's are under development.
 
SAE J-300 defines those numbers, and the lower number is defined in a completely different way than the upper number.

Monogrades are no longer cheaper and will soon be discontinued by most of the majors.

Mobil 1 Racing 4T is specifically formulated for motorcycles with wet clutchs and a single sump. Do not confuse with Mobil 1 V-Twin, which is not for motorcycles with wet clutches and a single sump. Racing 4T has plenty of additives such as ZDDP.

BTW Qwerty. Armed with the above information, I went shopping for oil yesterday and came home with a quart of Mobil 1 4T (aka MX4T) 10W-40 for my next oil change.
Your input confirms my decision. What a great forum !
