A new kickstart question - new kick crank boss?
|
|
|
|
|
I bought and installed the 3RW-W0795-00-00 kickstart kit from yamaha. I did not buy the TW200 kick crank assembly. I would like to find a way to use the kick crank that came with the kit so my question is, has anyone bought a TW200 'kick crank boss' and successfully mated the kit's kick crank to it?
The boss is item #16 on the parts diagram for the starter on a TW200, it is offset more than the boss that comes with the above kit. It would be a cheaper solution to buy just the TW200 boss (54G-15621-00-00) than to buy the TW200 kick crank assembly (54G-15620-00-00). My local parts dealer said the boss is $50, and the assembly is $88. Online I found each item cheaper. Provided this works, it's looking to be a $38 savings so far over the convention kickstart kit + TW200 kick crank assembly method.
Should I just be the guinea pig on this one and go for it? :)
Thanks for any help you can provide, Pat

Well, I went ahead and ordered the kick crank boss, p/n 54G-15621-00-00. When I get it in I'll see if it's works and let everyone know.

I just ordered all the parts to install a kick starter on both my 08 TW200s. I simply went to RonAyers.com and ordered all the parts individually from a 1999 model. It turned out cheaper than ordering the kit, then having to purchase the kick crank assembly. My parts should arrive next week, I'll let everyone know how they work after I get them installed. Just my opinion, but I think all the confusion started when folks try to mix and match parts to save money. Why not simply order the correct parts from a prior year? It was much easier for me this way. Ride safe

Well I had found the part on ebay for cheaper than ordering it through the dealer but was out bid. So I haven't been able to try it out.
But, I did some grinding on the kicker that comes with the 3RW-W0795-00-00 kit and did some bending on the rear brake lever and had to finagle with some other parts and I got it to work with only the parts in that kit. It's not the best looking, but I only had to buy the kit for $139 (after tax) and I've got a functioning kickstart. I'll go with it at the moment.

So,
A question for your kickstarter installers out there....if my 06' wants a kickstart, will any kickstart parts work???
What differences in this part(s) assembly have been made, if any?? Will any ol' TW kickstart kit work, from any previous years??
Please advise,
Adam

The kit I ordered (3RW-W0795-00-00) is actually for a TTR225. The catch with using this kit is it comes with a TT225 kicker assembly, and so it's been noted in the past that you have to buy a TW200 kicker assembly (54G-15620-00-00) to make it work properly. The reason the TTR kicker won't work is that it doesn't have enough offset to clear itself over the rear brake bracket and footpeg bracket. But I grinded my TTR kicker so it would have enough clearance. The risk: a weakened kicker that could break easier.
The initial post I made was to order only one part of the TW kicker assembly, the kick boss (54G-15621-00-00). I was hoping I would only have to buy a $50 part instead of the $88 kicker assembly. But again, I ended up grinding the TTR kicker that came with the kit and never ordered the part.
I don't have enough experience with all the years of the TW so I don't know if all years have the same exact part number, but I'm leaning towards yes they all are the same.
The options so far for getting a kickstart kit have been:
- Order the TTR225 kickstart kit (it's actually a GYTR kit, not a yamaha oem kit) AND order TW200 kicker assembly, or
- Order all individual oem parts off a microfiche for the TW200 kickstart, or
- My option which was to order the TTR225 kickstart kit and grind the kicker assembly that came with this kit to make it clearance over the footpeg bracket, along with bending the TW rear brake bracket.
If you go to bikebandit or any online yamaha dealer, you could look at microfiche's for each year and get part numbers, and compare part numbers. It also gives you a visual of the kick boss that is part of the kicker assembly that I was wanting to order to test, but didn't.

I've attached a microfiche of the kickstart that came stock on TW's (2000 and earlier models). When I ordered the TTR225 kickstart, I was supposed to order item 15 on this microfiche. Instead of ordering item 15 (kicker assembly), I was wanting to only order item 16 (kick boss). That should give you a better visual of what I'm talking about.<br>

It seems to be the concensus that all TWs are equal when it come to installing a kick starter. I robbed used parts from a 1993 tw and slapped them carefree onto a 2002 tw without buying anything new. Apparently if you get the xt225 kit the only problem is the kick lever itself as has been pointed out (bend it, mod it, or throw it away and get a tw lever). Tom

We'll see how long my modded lever lasts. With the amount of grinding I did, I don't think very long. Time will tell.

pgilles,
So, if I'm reading your above posts correctly, the TW already has parts 1-10 on the microfiche you've posted??? These don't have to be ordered?? Just the kit, with the additional TW kicker & boss?
thanks,
Adam

No, the TW needs the parts listed in the below attachment. The 'kit' (3RW-W0795-00-00) includes all these parts with the exception item #15. You can either order the kit along with item #15. Or, you can order each part individually from the parts list below. Its one or the other.
Instead of ordering each of these parts individually, I ordered the kit. The kit does come with a kicker but its the wrong kicker for a TW (remember the kit is actually for a TTR). So in addtion to the kit, I was suppose to order the TW kicker assembly (item 15).
I did not want to buy the whole TW kicker assembly (item 15) when only one part of that assembly (the boss, item 16) is really all I needed. I was going to order this boss, but I didn't. The reason I didn't was I decided to grind the wrong kicker that came with the kit until it was clearanced enough to fully swing on my TW.
In a nutshell, you need all the parts listed below. The kit contains all those parts, sans item 15. The reason people even talk about the kit is because it has been cheaper for some to order the kit than to order each part individually.
Hope that cleared up some of your confusion... Pat

Pat,
YES! That is crystal clear. THank you very much, I shall begin my price comparisons.
I'm excited. THis is one Major mod/addition that I've been wanting for quite some time now.
Thanks again,
Adam

Cool! You're welcome.
If you go with the kit, I'd recommend against grinding the kicker to make it work...mine required a lot of grinding and it's making me nervous that it's gonna bend and then eventually break. Hindsight is 20/20 so I'll recommend against what I did.
Shop around and sometimes your local dealer will match online prices.

Yes, I'll definitely get the TW kicker. I'm going to try to see if there is any older models here, being parted out first.
haha, I think I've "used up" all of my price matches here in Reno. It seems as though the sales people get quite irritated knocking off 50 dollars or more off of a 200.00 dollar part. They've refused my most rescent match requests.
Cyclepartswarehouse.com - the lowest prices I've found.
