The TW is a tractor in snow!

1990 TW in its natural habitat:
 TW meets a friend:
 They decide to explore:
 TW is a trooper!
Sucky narrow tire is not helping!
 It starts getting serious!
 Photo op!

Some times less power is wayyyyyyyy better! The little TW just ate up this snowy ride! My XR mounted companion went down 3 times and had to dis mount multiple times. I had zero problems and made every climb and descent! Love this little bike!

Yeah, I'm with you. Riding in cold weather and gear is fine. But riding off road is hard work and I was sweating like a w#ore in church! It was warm enough that I could probably ride in my summer gear except for the road miles to get to the woods.

I pull on raingear for the road miles to block the wind, pull it off for the offroad miles, thaen back on for the return trip.

I am considering buying my first TW and was interested by the post titled "the TW is a tractor in snow!" I was told today I was suicidal if I wanted to ride this 12 months out of the year to work through the Michigan winter. Would you say the stability of the TW is good on roads in the winter? or is it truly suicidal?

Stud the tiresa. Ride on ice. the problem isn't the bike, it's the morons in cages who loose contol and slide into you.

I agree. You make me feel like a wimp for waiting for most of the ice to melt here. You're an excellent photographer !

Yup, its golden in the snow! I've thought about studding my tires, but haven't done so yet.
Ridden all winter in Wyoming!
Only missed a few days when the roads were truly not visible under the ice. Its hard to commute 38mi one way with any kind of velocity when its that bad.
Mud is my problem, with that aborted tire/fender spacing.
I try to add a thimble full of HEET to each tank. I've suffered carb icing twice. You definately know it when that happens.

On another motorcycle I have I have had what I think is carb icing. Basically, a gradual loss of power to the point where it barely runs. I pull over and the engine quits. I let it sit for less than a minute and it starts right back up and runs fine. I think it start right up again because the air is above freezing and the engine is warm so the ice melts very quickly. This has only occurred while I was riding along the coast where the humidity is very high on coolish but above freezing days when I am moving at a pretty good speed .
What kind of symptoms do you have when the TW icing occurs? I suspect it doesn't clear up right away do to the below freezing air temps.
Long live the internal combustion engine!

I have never had any icing issue? I have ridden down to about 0f with no trouble other than my eyeballs icing

elime-Thats the description of the problem, perfectly.
Fuel line & carb icing behave the same way. The TW block apparently isn't enough of a thermal mass for heat conduction alone to keep things thawed out when you have cold air leaching it away at speed.
I swear, I once saw frost "inside" the retro-fitted inline fuel filter!
Have had no further symtoms since I began the application of a capfull of HEET to each tank of fuel.

When my bike's carb iced it was about 55 or 60 degrees but very humid. There was a fog bank just off the beach and the day was over cast. It was like a heavy dew in the air.
My understanding is the gasoline evaporates and cools down the jet, water condenses out on it and it can get cold enough to freeze. The ice then accumulates and eventually blocks the flow of air. In my case due to the warm air and warm engine the ice melted very quickly and the engine restarted very easily, which was a huge relief. I was a long ways from home!
As for riding in 0 degree, maybe cold air doesn't hold enough moisture to be a problem? Or maybe the oil companies realize there is a problem and add something to the gas to prevent it? I have heard the oil companies use different formulas for summer and winter gasoline and maybe anti icing is one of the factors.
Long live the internal combustion engine!

If you have frost in your fuel filter you have water in your fuel. HEEt is a good fix if you are getting contaminated fuel. This problem has become more widespread in the U. S. of A. with the infection of gasohol in our fuel supply. The ethanol absorbs water, with water/ethanol mixture settles out, then the water freezes the first cold, smooth surface it touches.
